does weight watchers work?A study from Health.com revealed that overweight and obese adults who followed the Weight Watchers program lost twice as much weight over a year than those who received weight loss advice from a doctor or nurse.

The study was published Wednesday, and was done on 772 men and women from Australia, Germany, and the United Kingdom. These people were recruited from ordinary doctor’s appointments to either receive a free Weight Watchers membership for 12 months, or to attend a monthly one-on-one meeting with a doctor.

The results were that the members of Weight Watchers lost an average of 15 pounds. This more than doubled the average of 7 pounds lost by those who continued to visit their doctors each month.

Michael Jensen, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic says “it’s only natural that the weekly weigh-ins and ‘group spirit’ of programs such as Weight Watchers would prove more effective than occasional guidance from a doctor or a nurse.”
